Section 375.21. Ladder to roof.

  • (1)  Every fire escape which extends higher than the second floor shall be provided with a ladder leading from the upper platform to the roof, unless the fire escape stairway leads to the roof. The ladder shall have stringers of not less than 1 1 / 4 inch pipe, or not less than 2 × 3 / 8 inch flat bars, at least 17 inches apart in the clear. The rungs shall be not less than 1 / 2 inch square or 5 / 8 inch round bars, 14 inches center to center. The stringers shall be securely tied together at intervals no greater than every fifth rung.
    (2)  The stringers of each ladder shall extend not less than 4 feet above the roof coping and return to within 2 feet of the roof with the top rung of the ladder level with the top of the parapet wall.
