Section 34.23. Substitute teacher license.

  • (1)  A substitute teacher license may be issued for a period of 5 years and may be renewed for additional 5 year periods if the requirements under this section are met. A substitute teacher license may be issued to an applicant who has held or is eligible to hold a Wisconsin license issued under subch. VII or the equivalent license in another state. Any teacher who holds a license may substitute teach as specified in sub. (2) .
    (2)  A short-term substitute shall be a licensed teacher or a licensed substitute teacher; however, a short-term substitute may be employed to teach any subject at any grade level. A long-term substitute shall be a licensed teacher or a licensed substitute teacher; however, a long-term substitute may be employed only in the subject and grade level in which the teacher is licensed. An emergency license or permit may be granted to a long-term substitute.
